Minecraft’s “Chase the Skies” update brings a major leap for gamers, literally. The Happy Ghast is a brand-new flying mob that lets you and up to three friends soar above the Overworld in style. Unlike traditional mobs, though, the Happy Ghast doesn’t spawn naturally.

Instead, you need to go through a multi-stage process to grow and tame one. It takes time and a few snowballs, but the reward is a powerful and adorable new way to travel. So, to help you get your hands on this sky-gliding companion, here’s everything you need to know about raising a Happy Ghast in Minecraft.

How To Get Happy Ghast in Minecraft

To get a Happy Ghast in Minecraft, your journey begins deep in the Nether with a unique item known as the Dried Ghast Block. This block is most commonly found in Soul Sand Valleys, usually protruding from the white Nether fossils scattered across the terrain.

      Get The Dried Ghast Block

There’s a 33.3% chance for these blocks to generate within the fossil structures, making exploration worthwhile if you come prepared with armor and supplies. Alternatively, you can craft a Dried Ghast Block using eight ghast tears and one soul sand on a crafting table.

You can also try your luck by bartering with Piglins. Although the latter method only offers a 2.13% chance of receiving one per gold ingot, it’s a viable route if you’re stocked up on gold.

Turn Dried Ghast Block Into Ghastling

Once you’ve obtained a Dried Ghast Block, place it in the Overworld and waterlog it using a water bucket. This begins the rehydration process, with green particles slowly emerging around the block.

Over the course of 20 minutes, the Dried Ghast will smile and transform into a Ghastling, a smaller and peaceful version of the traditional Ghast.

Grow The Ghastling Into Happy Ghast

From here, patience is key again. If you let it sit uninterrupted, the Ghastling will naturally mature into a Happy Ghast after another 20 minutes. However, if you want to speed things up, feed the Ghastling 64 snowballs, and it will instantly evolve into a fully grown Happy Ghast ready for flight.

How To Use Happy Ghast in Minecraft

Once your Ghastling becomes a Happy Ghast, it’s time to make the most of its incredible utility. The Happy Ghast is rideable and can carry up to four players simultaneously through the air.

To ride it, you’ll need to craft a harness, which requires the following materials:

      • 3 Leather Blocks
      • 2 Glass Blocks
      • 1 Wool Block

      How To Ride Happy Ghast

After crafting the harness, simply equip it on the Happy Ghast, and you can then ride a Happy Ghast just like any other rideable mob, like a Horse. This mob can naturally float at high altitudes, so to prevent them from drifting off.

You should tether them with leads or create a Happy Ghast station, which is a designated area built to keep your flying companion grounded when not in use. Using leads, you can connect the Ghast to boats or directly to livestock and villagers.

Doing this also lets you move difficult-to-transport mobs, such as two villagers at once, over vast distances, simplifying tasks like setting up trading halls or relocating animals.
