Minecraft just got weirder and a little more adorable with the “Chase the Skies” content drop in version 1.21.6. Among the additions is a curious new block called the Dried Ghast, a tiny cube with more personality than most mobs.
While hostile Ghasts still float ominously through the Nether, this little block has something more peaceful if you can get your hands on it. There are three primary ways to obtain the Dried Ghast Block in Minecraft, and each one takes you deep into the Nether. Here’s a complete guide on how you can get it.
How To Get Dried Ghast Block in Minecraft

The first and easiest way to get a Dried Ghast Block is by exploring the Soul Sand Valleys in the Nether. These valleys, with their gloomy ambiance and frequent skeleton encounters, are your best bet.
Look around white Nether fossils found in these valleys, there’s a 33.3% chance that a Dried Ghast Block will spawn in the fossil structure. When you see one sticking out of the bones, break it with any tool (or even by hand) to collect it.
If you’re unlucky in finding one naturally, your next option is crafting the block using resources from the Nether itself. And finally, there’s the rarest method, which is bartering with Piglins.
If you’re wearing gold armor and hand over a gold ingot to a Piglin, there’s a 2.13% chance they’ll toss a Dried Ghast Block your way. It’s low, but not impossible, especially if you’re bartering in bulk.
Dried Ghast Block Crafting Recipe

To craft a Dried Ghast Block, you’ll need the following materials:
- 8 Ghast Tears
- 1 Soul Sand Block
Ghast Tears drop from Ghasts when they’re killed, and Soul Sand is readily available in Soul Sand Valleys. Once you have the ingredients, place them on a Crafting Table like this:
- Put the Soul Sand in the center slot.
- Surround it with Ghast Tears in all eight remaining slots.
This crafting recipe yields 1 Dried Ghast Block, making it a fair trade-off given how rare ghast tears can be in large quantities.
How To Use Dried Ghast Block
What makes the Dried Ghast Block more than just a collectible is its transformative ability when submerged in water. Once you place it in water, it begins a rehydration process.
Initially, green particles will begin to appear around the block, and their color slowly shifts to a brighter tone. The changes happen in stages:
- 5 minutes in water: Partially hydrated (noticeable color shift and slight smile)
- 10 minutes: Mostly hydrated (further brightening and cheerier expression)
- 15 minutes: Fully hydrated (vibrant and happy-looking)
- 20 minutes: The block transforms into a Ghastling, a friendly entity that will eventually grow into a “Happy Ghast.”
However, the process is fragile. If you remove the Dried Ghast Block from water at any point, it slowly reverts to its original dried state. Breaking the block during rehydration also causes it to reset entirely. So if you’re aiming to raise a Happy Ghast, make sure the block stays submerged and untouched for the full duration.
